It's pretty cool.<br />
<br />
I've experimented with low-poly models so far to test it out, but from what I've seen it can handle fairly high-poly meshes, though I suppose that depends on the computer the model is being viewed on.<br />
The first guinea pig was my low-poly, low-texture shield. Works smoothly enough.<br />

<br />
The second, and much more recent attempt was a voxel interpretation of a Platehead, an alien grazer.<br />

Dan Emmerson: Animation Reel 2012<br />
Music: Uprising by Muse.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-60218536552119778942012-05-16T08:36:00.003-07:002012-05-16T08:39:05.005-07:00Horror and hidingSo recent <a href="http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/05/09/dead-space-3-allegedly-features-co-op">rumours about <i>Dead Space 3</i></a> have hit the internet. Ranging from <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/">being set on an icy planet</a>, to featuring customisable weapons, story mode co-op and even a cover system.
<br>
Obviously such a strong departure from <i>Dead Space's</i> dark, claustrophobic setting and gameplay not suited to combat caused a bit of a stir among fans. Me being one of them, I too was taken back by this potential shift. This wasn't unexpected news, as <i>Dead Space 2</i> was more action-oriented than its predecessor, and it only makes sense for developers to aim games to a more general, action-loving audience. The <i>Resident Evil</i> series has been going down this path for years, including the upcoming <i>Resident Evil 6</i>, which has been made even more action-y than any other <i>RE</i> title. Why? <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/03/23/capcom-wants-resident-evil-to-be-more-action-y.aspx">Money of course</a>. To big developers, it no longer seems financially viable to produce a Survival Horror game in its true sense. <i>Resident Evil 5</i> sold more copies than <i>Resident Evil 4</i>, so clearly Capcom were doing something 'right'. <p>
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://residentevilbio.yolasite.com/resources/resident-evil-5_26-07-08_01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="262" width="472" src="http://residentevilbio.yolasite.com/resources/resident-evil-5_26-07-08_01.jpg" /></a></div>
<center> No, Capcom, you're right. There's nothing more terrifying than well-lit open spaces</center>
<p>
However, we don't <i>know</i> that <i>Dead Space 3</i> will take <i>Resident Evil's</i> path and become a full-on action cover-based shooter, this is based entirely on a loose rumour. The co-op seems like a horrible idea, though, as adding another player or brick-stupid mandatory AI will only detract from the isolated feeling of <i>Dead Space</i> - and horror in general. A cover system may not be such a bad thing for a horror game, however.<br>
A critical element of horror is suspense - which in turn is a result of the relationship between two factors - Hope and uncertainty. The player hopes to reach their goal, be it reaching the end of a level, escaping a room or simply surviving. The uncertainty arises from the ambiguity of the player's ability to reach this goal. <br>
Now, suspense is relevant to any genre, and even games such as <i>Super Monkey Ball</i> can create suspense using these factors.
Recently I have been playing a lot of <i>Deus Ex: Human Revolution</i>, a brilliant game that is brilliant. The game discourages the brute force approach, encouraging players to sneak their way around. These are tense moments - hiding in an enemy stronghold, hoping that a passing sentry won't bother to look over the small piece of wall you're pinned desperately behind, alerting the entire building to little ol' you. These stealth moments are some of the tensest parts of any game I've played. This example, of course, only works when the player is vulnerable - when there is some risk associated with being discovered, be it Adam Jensen is understocked in weaponry, low on health or simply trying to get that ghost achievement. There is a tangible suspense and this isn't a game designed to scare. This needs to be put to horror use. <br>
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images.huffingtonpost.com/2011-09-06-deus%20ex-DXHR_screenshot_Adamstealthcover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="345" width="600" src="http://images.huffingtonpost.com/2011-09-06-deus%20ex-DXHR_screenshot_Adamstealthcover.jpg" /></a></div>
<center> Tension. Also, robot arms </center>
<p>
<i>Amnesia: The Dark Descent</i>, i.e. one of the scariest things ever made by human beings, lets the defenseless protagonist, Daniel (this scared me a little when the game seemed to be talking to me directly) can either run or hide. Hide around corners, hide behind doors and hide in cupboards. The game even gives the player the ability to peek around corners without coming out of cover. All this to avoid some guys with weird faces.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images.wikia.com/amnesia/images/8/8f/Tumblr_lg42xeIjcB1qdmf5io1_500.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="319" width="493" src="http://images.wikia.com/amnesia/images/8/8f/Tumblr_lg42xeIjcB1qdmf5io1_500.png" /></a></div>
<center>Pictured: World's most effective laxative</center>
<p>
Now, I have had plans for a cover-based horror game for a couple of months now,'in the works', so to speak, so this is an idea that I've had to pitch to people. In this game, the protagonist runs and hides from his problems instead of facing them - it's in his character. With no means of combat or defence, he is pretty much done for once his cover is blown. Blown cover in <i>Metal Gear Solid </i> and <i>Deus Ex </i>generally results in a clumsy panicked attempt at a firefight, raising the tension from moderate to somewhere ridiculous. My horror game has an enemy monster which can follow the blood trail of the wounded protagonist right to where he is hiding. When this pig/dog/moth finds the player, it alerts all surrounding enemies to your presence.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW254cjMdSfXrcjb41rLCmTsVuRRllusBSNVGNci3doJ28rbyfBPO9irsZ0WswpIxslGYjF4lFpHAK_wCrHRnZxiRgxX6kJbxl8kod-3KXDkAX-QzxQ7AHT-WtgcAUdqhUQD5Hp8pFuQM/s1600/Concept1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW254cjMdSfXrcjb41rLCmTsVuRRllusBSNVGNci3doJ28rbyfBPO9irsZ0WswpIxslGYjF4lFpHAK_wCrHRnZxiRgxX6kJbxl8kod-3KXDkAX-QzxQ7AHT-WtgcAUdqhUQD5Hp8pFuQM/s400/Concept1.png" /></a></div>
<P>
So from this we could believe that cover in Dead Space 3 <i>could</i> be used to great effect. Encouraging the player to keep Isaac hidden from the necromorphs and new human enemies would be a great way to create atmosphere. Combining this with the gore and panic from the previous 2 titles, players could be given a truly horrifying experience.
<p>

<p>
On the topic of video games currently being designed, I'm also adding more details to Machina, a '3rd Person Puzzle Platformer thing with birds and Moais' video game idea I've had for quite a while. It occured to me recently that I haven't put much, if anything online about Machina, except for a few halo concepts. Over the next few months I'll be putting together a brief production bible for it, including characters, creatures, settings, designs and a basic story and themes.
<p>
It has occured to me while designing things for the two games is that most people may be rushing in with the visual, sound and kinesthetic models - i.e. the game - and leaving the story, themes and emotions to lag behind. People want to make games, not tell stories.<br>
If any of these projects sprouts wings and takes off, I'll be sure to employ an actual writer to make sure that a good story with good wrtiting is told, and doesn't play out like a 5-year-old scribbled it down.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-76502189672883128612012-05-14T05:30:00.001-07:002012-05-14T05:31:09.723-07:00Modelling a monsterIn some spare time, I've been working on a model of a creature from one of my dreams about a year ago.<br>
The scavenging Skewer:<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/178/a/f/Dream_Skewers_by_Purple_Plasmid.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="415" width="555" src="http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/178/a/f/Dream_Skewers_by_Purple_Plasmid.png" /></a></div>
<p>
"Me and some others were looking into a large mountain lake on a blue rock dam. The sky was a soft lilac and the rocks of the mountains were a greyish blue.
We looked over the rail into the dam lake to see a manatee with ribbony extensions that rippled with the water as it swam towards us. It stopped at the wall of the dam and looked up at us through the water, rolling playfully.<br>
I say to the person next to me that it's a manatee. They disagree because "it doesn't have hoof caps, so it can't be a manatee".
There was a dark shape appearing below the manatee in the water. As the mass got closer, the 'manatee' sensed its presence and swam off. And not a moment too soon. From the deep indigo water erupted an enormous, shaggy beast. When the water had settled from the air, the beast was showed to be a massive brown bear holding an equally scaled fish-like creature, about ten stories tall from the water, and that was just from the waist. It gave a deafening roar, took a bite from the already butchered fish-thing and discarded it. It landed with a fleshy thud on the dam.<br>
I would have inspected the corpse, with its fleshy exterior and protruding bones, but the bear seemed angry and took swipes at the now gathering crowd.
High in the air a burning whirring sound got closer. Two 'skewers' were flying up overhead. <br>
They had leathery black skin, striated down the body for aerodynamics. Near the back were two angled bony struts, one on each side of the body, and each with a large organic jet engine at the end, each with small fleshy fins to assist stability and giving out a burning roar as the power the creature's flight. A smaller engine whirred below them further down the struts, taking the total engine pod number to 4. Halfway along the body are the creature's eyes. Grey/brown/green irises and constantly looking around independently, they are set upon 2 flat skull panels that project rigidly from the main body. The eyes are set facing upwards. Below the skull on the bottom side of the body is a micro-serrated feeding blade, with lots of liquid-absorbing holes.<br>
Terminating the strong, flexible neck the front of the creature is the sonar head/intake grill. The skin of this organ is a shiny, leathery texture, with the front end of it a jaundiced yellow and fading to the black of the rest of the body at the tip of the neck. The sonar was just audible, and was a constant, grating sound. Sort of like the sound of unzipping a zip, increasing the frequency and putting it through overdrive filter.<br>
One skewer turned its sonar head towards the corpse, briefly inspecting with its sonar (and possibly smelling the carrion with the intake grill) and banked down and descended. The other followed. By the time they approached the giant fish carcass, most of the crowd had cleared. Only when they slowed and landed gently on the corpse, was their true size visible. They were about the length of a train carriage. At the sight of these creatures, the bear gurgled and retreated back into the water.<br>
Once on the corpse, they both shuffled to work their feeding blade into the flesh. Despite their enormous size, they both only just covered the fish body."<p>

This basic planar UV projection worked okay, but I'm in the progress of smoothing the mesh and unrwapping it properly. I've had a tinker with RoadKill, an auto-unwrap tool, but I've had no luck with it yet. Once it's unwrapped I'll bring it into mudbox for detailed sculting and painting.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-26689809133928121092012-05-06T07:01:00.000-07:002012-05-06T07:02:14.932-07:00Biggest planet cracker in her class...So the USG-Ishimura (my new fancy computer) has been allocated rendering duty.<br>
However, while the computer is pretty beasty for everything else, rendering seems to be what the mining vessel seems to struggle with.
<br>

<center> I guess planet cracking is more its thing </center>
<br>
It's taking the my computer 25-30 minutes to render each frame, and despite tweaks to protocols, added scripts to clean up texture referencing and scene clean-up it still struggles. After rendering on and off for a few days, though, the shot is finally rendered.<br>
Almost. The remaining few frames are being delegated to other people because their computers seem to do a better job.<p>
So, in somewhat related news, I recently bought Dead Space 1 and 2 on Steam (because they were cheap) and I finally came across myself.

In between working on projects, I've been working on my website. This is the design/layout I'm thinking of using for my home page.

<p>
I need to update the 'under construction'page I have for my website at the moment, as I imagine that blank page will put people off. So that'll be the plan for today. I'm trying not to make the design for the website too busy.
<p>
I gave up on the Photoshop filters for LoveHate, so instead I went back through and re-drew each frame.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br>
It takes a while, but it fits with Alice's sketchy style she's using for the film.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br>
The lines are all scribblified, now I just need to go through and colour it, which won't take long because it is in Flash and Flash is lovely with colouring (K -> click). None of that manual drawing as seen in ToonBoom and TVP.
<p>
Now finally, before I get back to work, I have been setting myself a challenge. Dictionary.com have a <i>Word of the Day</i> app, which brings you a new and fancy word each day to help expand your vocabulary. This in conjunction with my recent efforts to get better at logo design resulted in the 'Logo of the Day' challenge. Inventive, I know. The challenge involves thinking of a company/brand/product with the word of the day name, and then see how that would affect the logo design and what message it should convey. Hopefully it will force me to try new styles and techniques. <p>
The first day was May 3rd, <i>Numen</i>: "Divine power, especially one who inhabits a particular object."
<br>
This made me think of powerful AI systems residing inside a machine built body - an almost ethereal concept like consciousnesses contained within a mortally-constructed object strikes me as very similar to the genie in the lamp.
<br>
<p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/124/2/b/numen_ai_systems_by_purple_plasmid-d4yj6yw.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="700" width="500" src="http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/124/2/b/numen_ai_systems_by_purple_plasmid-d4yj6yw.png" /></a></div>
<br>
The drops line up to form an N, but what I didn't realise (and I was pretty pleased with this) is that you can use the N lines to make the letters A I . I'm just so smart even I can't keep up.
<br>
I've already failed the 'daily' aspect simply because I don't have the time to make them all neat like this one, but I have done designs for the latest 3 which I will upload eventually.
<p>
Now, you may watch some things.<p>

This is quite a major milestone.
<br />
That's not <i> entirely </i> true, there are still some tweaks to be done to certain shots and I'm still adding the beautiful details in Kernel's final shot, such as floating debris, flapping fabric and organic growth. I'm actually pretty proud of the shot's animation, so I can only wait to see it rendered once it's finished.<br />
I'm also going to be playing a part in Kernel's sound design now that my place as Animation Director is no longer needed. This will include not only foley but the grunts and groans of Leonard himself. That's right. I will BE Leonard.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yaHyJD5TSjw/T4RZKaBCf5I/AAAAAAAABUw/txrT7JV7iTc/s1600/sc02_sh1and2_Render_534.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yaHyJD5TSjw/T4RZKaBCf5I/AAAAAAAABUw/txrT7JV7iTc/s1600/sc02_sh1and2_Render_534.jpg" /></a></div>
<center> Pictured: Me. </center>
<br />
Now that my animation 'talents' are no longer needed on Kernel, I'm helping other projects with their animation as well.<br />
One of these is <a href="http://aliceanimation.blogspot.co.uk/">Alice's <i>Love Hate</i></a>, which is VoxPop short film, similar in principle to Aardman's Creature Comforts, only in 2D.<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/k9P8Ban1vcQ" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
This bit is of an interview with a young boy who hates everything. I drew these lines in flash, but after animating I was told that they are too clean, and didn't fit <i>Love Hate's</i> more sketchy cut-out look. In an attempt to save time, I tried Photoshop's batch process action to apply a filter to the whole image sequence.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixd7eTiCuoMW5746R1Xk8OiKwlir4xaKJ4xcP1E73S9K-MkOguIo4R1Sl6_CDulg7FP1IlJReFGKuNvaAnKgmQAi-z_mb08e2W06KL1lErzTtoxluQQ_wslHfEpXXenAxeuEduTfqO1rA/s1600/LoveHate_Filtertests.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixd7eTiCuoMW5746R1Xk8OiKwlir4xaKJ4xcP1E73S9K-MkOguIo4R1Sl6_CDulg7FP1IlJReFGKuNvaAnKgmQAi-z_mb08e2W06KL1lErzTtoxluQQ_wslHfEpXXenAxeuEduTfqO1rA/s400/LoveHate_Filtertests.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<center> These are the most qualifying filters </center>
<br />
The batch process is actually pretty useful, and I also discovered how Actions work, and seems like a great way to give multiple images the same 'feel' with ease. I'll definitely be trying it out in the future.
Here are the 'Splatter' and 'Cutout' filters applied to the animation: <br />
<br>
<P>
<iframe width="600" height="437" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lKF5MuHRIp0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br>
<center> Turn it up to 1080 HD and fullscreen, please. </center>
<P>
The 'cutout' filter makes it look like the frames have been drawn with a heavy ink pen, wheres the 'splatter' filter makes it looks like it's crawling with spiders.
<br>
I feel that the filters will end up not working, and I'll have to just draw over the original lines which won't be difficult, but I will definitely be tedious. This is what interns are for.
<br>
<br>
In conjunction with our 'professional practice', I have been working on marketing and self promotion.<br>
I've already got a <a href="http://doodledemmy.co.uk/">basic website</a> up and running, but lately I've been working on two other approaches. One is a basic idea for my business card:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3dhYeX4WWpw18z2_FbFrJhAokfe8cOekrN4Sn3eH-j3XTXpKOxMMyLpyDB-yuOoB1pvfL3NZhISHcLueDtUJgKc1onwhioWsa0XE5bcHkT_Rz_AfJfs1GwnQOoATswZYd36GjKTpWr_c/s1600/Card1_back.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="202" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3dhYeX4WWpw18z2_FbFrJhAokfe8cOekrN4Sn3eH-j3XTXpKOxMMyLpyDB-yuOoB1pvfL3NZhISHcLueDtUJgKc1onwhioWsa0XE5bcHkT_Rz_AfJfs1GwnQOoATswZYd36GjKTpWr_c/s320/Card1_back.png" /></a></div>
<center>'front'</center>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzlgZf6gmYTs6uaPt2NgE2X470LWy9UOe8MjtjOrfdqs0f8ykN__hffJGJAfFMTRN42FxlUDLDjS7O-ZaCSgp51hyphenhyphenQmUCJLkZJlSvn0A_QzWaiNWJMpi04oSkiPbGDpQwK9zuVRZ7r2-I/s1600/Card1_front.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="202" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzlgZf6gmYTs6uaPt2NgE2X470LWy9UOe8MjtjOrfdqs0f8ykN__hffJGJAfFMTRN42FxlUDLDjS7O-ZaCSgp51hyphenhyphenQmUCJLkZJlSvn0A_QzWaiNWJMpi04oSkiPbGDpQwK9zuVRZ7r2-I/s320/Card1_front.png" /></a></div>
<center>'back'</center>
<br>
I decided to not have a definite front or back to the design (hence the 'quotation marks') because to me it just makes sense to have information on both sides. Why would you have information squished up in tiny font on only one side and leave the other blank? The basic design philosophy for these is that I create very graphic designs such as logos and layouts, but inside the white space there is also the weird organic stuff I doodle and draw. It gets my point across before they've even read anything. I'm still refining it, and I don't want to go for this first design because that feels <i> too easy </i>.
<p>
The other piece of advertising is printed Tshirts:
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgliUW2_oCPaKcJwx9H08r9eXBArYvaDUTafDQxiJ6nN2JvFrnnq-DJBsXrlbvbye6l4GxEmMP9dakvebHtkVq15DviOO6J-s7LliaucPEDvMqZyqCXcqTG3t0lldw0OB-xlX01J5Iia40/s1600/BeautyTshirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgliUW2_oCPaKcJwx9H08r9eXBArYvaDUTafDQxiJ6nN2JvFrnnq-DJBsXrlbvbye6l4GxEmMP9dakvebHtkVq15DviOO6J-s7LliaucPEDvMqZyqCXcqTG3t0lldw0OB-xlX01J5Iia40/s400/BeautyTshirt.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<p>
This is a test I ordered from CafePress. It cost £20, which isn't too bad seeing as that includes shipping and it's a good quality T-shirt, not some paper thin transparent sliver of cotton. It's a print of this drawing:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/166/f/4/beauty_of_love_by_purple_plasmid-d3j0e5k.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="431" width="500" src="http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/166/f/4/beauty_of_love_by_purple_plasmid-d3j0e5k.png" /></a></div>
<p>
Considering I didn't change anything to make printing easier, such as adding halftone-dots for shadows or playing with contrast, the design came out perfectly. Much better than I expected. I also have my logo and website address on the back collar (so people know where to find other things like this).
<p>
I have a similar drawing on the way, and I'm definitely considering making it into a T-shirt. <a href="http://purple-plasmid.deviantart.com/#/d4xxtu6">This one</a>:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/119/8/d/woo_yeah___colour_test_by_purple_plasmid-d4xxtu6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="602" width="500" src="http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/119/8/d/woo_yeah___colour_test_by_purple_plasmid-d4xxtu6.png" /></a></div>
<br>
<center> There won't be any watermarks on the final design, plus the colouring isn't finished. </center>
<br>
Woo Yeah is going to be coloured and shaded with halftone dots and other things that work better with screen printing. The best advice is to avoid gradients, which can make the shadows look a bit blurry and add colour noise where the colour should be completely flat. For some reason the halftone dot filter in Photoshop uses a gradient as opposed to smaller dots, which I need to figure out how to fix.
<br>
Finally I am doing some animation for <a href="http://insaburch.com/">Insa Burch's 1890</a>, a documentary about the plight of Female skaters. The film features live-action footage with composited animation integrated into the scenes.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjERH4rqLMy7C6ZI0euFEr0tZPz77tWYJVp8k5VwJqPcu-CFWybOw_WhwunBNNUcY2_Mps-FzPOVsxm4Dhh1uDTKapbL5n3lNE-eNRnO5zRnti4Ra6C5NDl6k3dOtgHVevJTd_SQMncAy4/s1600/ScaredGirl_frame_roughMen.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="180" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjERH4rqLMy7C6ZI0euFEr0tZPz77tWYJVp8k5VwJqPcu-CFWybOw_WhwunBNNUcY2_Mps-FzPOVsxm4Dhh1uDTKapbL5n3lNE-eNRnO5zRnti4Ra6C5NDl6k3dOtgHVevJTd_SQMncAy4/s320/ScaredGirl_frame_roughMen.png" /></a></div>
<center> These are just stand-ins for position and scale. The final designs will be closer to Insa's hand-drawn, almost woodcut drawing style. </center>
<br>
I'm only doing this one shot for the moment, as I'm still unsure of my availability and I don't want to promise work I can't do.
<p>
That's all for now. <center> This film is looking goooooood </center>
<br />
One under-attended project is Jackson Tayler's projection system, <a href="http://jax-digitalanimation.blogspot.com/">HexMap</a> .<br />
I decided to make a couple of loops for the project, all of which with a running thing of cubes/voxels due to the nature of the system.<br />
These loops are inspired by three main sources:<p/>
<b>Voxatron</b><br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="437" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_q-xqI8Cm5A" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
This is a fun Indie game made by developers <a href="http://www.lexaloffle.com/">Lexaloffle</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGY5KiEbeKw0NbWIC70Krnv-4gJ3KAV53oIvEsxXLf7cysIgqF12KcnbPryBmfRjoDZPIa7locUeOazthPC5NMESc3vQHYFeEeFfRmJM5VQkMGuV5SXVH20K-z9whU-rV4_FEF2YuXbro/s1600/Lexaloffle_broken+Logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGY5KiEbeKw0NbWIC70Krnv-4gJ3KAV53oIvEsxXLf7cysIgqF12KcnbPryBmfRjoDZPIa7locUeOazthPC5NMESc3vQHYFeEeFfRmJM5VQkMGuV5SXVH20K-z9whU-rV4_FEF2YuXbro/s400/Lexaloffle_broken+Logo.png" width="400" /></a></div>
Voxatron is a simple twin-stick-style shooter rendered in beautiful voxels. The environments are even destructible, crumbling into voxel rubble if the player removes their foundations. One of my favourite things about Voxatron is that if an enemy or object clips off the lower edge of the screen, their fully fleshed out interior is visible. I feel like this mechanic could have been exploited more thoroughly, because it's not a mechanic the most games can pull off with their silly polygons.
<p/>
<b>3D DOT GAME HEROES</b><br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hoFYEtj2tDw" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
A game that re-imagines old-school RPG's in both visual style, gameplay and difficulty. The entire game is made of voxels, and has some lovely lighting effects.
<p />
And finally there's <b>Pixels</b> by Patrick Jean.<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ou8vRWTSsJo" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
This beautiful piece of post-production speaks for itself. Just watch it if you haven't already. I love the glassy/waxy effect on the pixels, and how the Earth becomes a lower and lower resolution block.
<br />
Now back to Hexmap. The first Loop I managed to finish was a swimming Voxel Shark.
Here's the work in progress:
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<center>I originally intended to do an exploded diagram of all of the shark's voxelly innards. I abandoned the idea soon after realizing how long it would take. I may consider it once I finish some sort of shark loop.</center>

And here is the finished product - All rendered to perfection.
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_kgNwH77L2E" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
And here it is swimming. hand animated voxel by voxel.
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/vDfwnSaxqqo" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
This shark came out much <b>much MUCH</b> better than I was expecting. I'm genuinely impressed and surprised with how it looks. Hooray for me.
<p>
for this task I was tempted to use a <a href="http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/downloads/scripts-plugins/polygon/c/voxelizer">piece of voxelising software</a> to convert regular polygon mesh into voxels.
<br />
<br />
<center><a href="http://www.creativecrash.com/system/photos/000/098/913/98913/big/Voxelizer1.0.png?1278196947" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="http://www.creativecrash.com/system/photos/000/098/913/98913/big/Voxelizer1.0.png?1278196947" width="396" /></a></center>
<br />
I heard however, that voxelising software can be buggy. I haven't had the chance to give the software a go, so it could potentially be brilliant. I like doing it by hand, though, it feels more 'crafted'. <br />
I am still yet to immerse the shark in a HexMap template due to some issues with Maya crashing when saving - but I plan on making the shark move around the Z-X axis to make the swimming a bit more animated. Also adding some bubbles moving through the water would make the shark look like it's travelling. Also, potentially, a sea floor with an animated pixel texture to synthesize the appearance of movement. That will be a mission for either what remains of the evening or tomorrow morning.
<p>
Another loop I produced is a beating cube heart.<br />
I initially began a few months ago with these tests (and their nauseating moving lights):<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="437" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6rL3ULbHecM" width="600"></iframe> <br />
<br>
But I had forgotten about them whilst working on Kernel. This weekend, however, I re-rendered the heart and made it HD, brighter and more intense: <br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="437" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4w5QIhXktzA" width="600"></iframe> <br />
<br>
Focusing mostly on animation means that I very rarely render anything, so these two short loops provided some challenges and learning experiences (I still have to look up how to render an ambient occlusion pass). Also playing around with the colour correction in After Effects led tho this <i>other</i> render of the heart:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZhXLmZVO7D1PWN0bO3MAC0zb1pLaRu7EGGfUZBv48kixSPdSfER0BLsOWwipXhwBJEmptT_mknX0VUGNYCx55VoUdF9KyQ3WaOyIXFOl97j-DitdYCOwkRhHMFXZsxb0_QQ2-w14tqTU/s1600/PinkTeal_hexmap.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="348" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZhXLmZVO7D1PWN0bO3MAC0zb1pLaRu7EGGfUZBv48kixSPdSfER0BLsOWwipXhwBJEmptT_mknX0VUGNYCx55VoUdF9KyQ3WaOyIXFOl97j-DitdYCOwkRhHMFXZsxb0_QQ2-w14tqTU/s400/PinkTeal_hexmap.png" /></a></div>
<br />
I quite like it, but I don't think it'll be as popular as the red heart. I've never really played around with post-processing because back in my youth animating in Flash, I'd do all of the colours in Flash itself (making uploading to sites like Newgrounds much easier) so tinkering with effects like bloom and motion blur in post doesn't really occur to me.
<p>
I've been doing a lot more pen/biro/marker work lately (mostly to fill the time made by play-blasting animation) but I'm getting more confident with blending and shading with them. Take a look:

<p>
Other, non-paper experiments include some mock ads for fictional companies as an exercise in designing logos:
<p>
<a href="http://fav.me/d4u2hya">Spyleaf Ads [1]</a>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/085/4/c/spyleaf_ads__1__by_purple_plasmid-d4u2hya.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="277" width="444" src="http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/085/4/c/spyleaf_ads__1__by_purple_plasmid-d4u2hya.png" /></a></div>
<br>
Once piece of feedback described the Henbeck Medical company's logo as 'too busy'. I can see where they're coming from, but the aim of the logo was to convey careful intricacy, and the black 'pixels' overlaying the white heart is meant to reflect the company's devotion and development of prosthetics and artificial implants. One of which being AG NODES, which I will discuss in a later blog post.
<p>
Another flight of fancy is this fictional method of providing artificial meat and muscle for prosthetics, which I spent a weekend creating in Maya.<br>
<a href="http://fav.me/d4tifr6">Jackfruit Inc. Muscle Packet</a>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/080/7/6/jackfruit_inc__muscle_tissue_pack__by_purple_plasmid-d4tifr6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="600" src="http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/080/7/6/jackfruit_inc__muscle_tissue_pack__by_purple_plasmid-d4tifr6.png" /></a></div><br>
To avoid the assaults and accusations of Animal Rights activists, several companies turned to other ways to provide meat.
Some tried producing non-meat alternatives, which while financially viable, never really caught on as the replacement meat. Others grew designer animals which lacked capacity for pain and produced large quantities of muscle. There is, however, issues with hormones contained within the meat.<br>
Jackfruit inc, a biotech company, took the approach of stretching muscle tissue across two bars and using electrical pulses to cause it to contract. An extension of this technology resulted in small meat 'packets', which are fastened to an elasticated conveyor belt and take a matter of weeks to grow to an edible food source.<br>
<p>
The company is also collaborating with prosthetics industries to provide natural muscle for basic artificial limbs and synthetic pets.
<p>
The company founder Whilton Jack - an eccentric man - uses these packets in his prosthetic leg, and was quoted as saying:<br>
"Sometimes I like to take the pack from my prosthetic and use it for dinner. I like to eat my leg"
<p>
Another quick Maya experiment was to model some potential aliens for another speculative biology project alongside <i>Fentil</i> (remember that?) which explores the life that may be inhabiting <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_(moon)">Saturn's amber-veiled moon, Titan</a> with its thick atmosphere and methane lakes.<br>
So here is a <a href="http://fav.me/d4rtgqy">Titan 'Fish'.</a>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/064/6/5/titan___fish___by_purple_plasmid-d4rtgqy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="350" src="http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/064/6/5/titan___fish___by_purple_plasmid-d4rtgqy.jpg" /></a></div><br>
They swim through the water by spinning their bodies and modifying the shape, size and angle of the small paddles on their sides.
<p>
They are the origin of the body plan for Titan amphibians such as this <a href="http://fav.me/d39j4n8">purple studded lemon thing</a>.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/046/9/1/titan_roller_by_purple_plasmid-d39j4n8.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="250" width="450" src="http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/046/9/1/titan_roller_by_purple_plasmid-d39j4n8.png" /></a></div>
<br>
<br>
<br>
And finally I have a website up and running (sort of).
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpDT_BCJ25OK04P2kuU-_cWtjMRlHX4ov8e7ZSwNuSgQha4mQ8NIrpJHHbIFbpdSii9Fd02gcbtt5G7HEM2mwy22h5BHdRxD3haWEgSjO_m8VDHm13sWEJpgr6DTxstTKBYMPkwqwY7hg/s1600/DoodleDemmy.co.uk_underconstruction.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpDT_BCJ25OK04P2kuU-_cWtjMRlHX4ov8e7ZSwNuSgQha4mQ8NIrpJHHbIFbpdSii9Fd02gcbtt5G7HEM2mwy22h5BHdRxD3haWEgSjO_m8VDHm13sWEJpgr6DTxstTKBYMPkwqwY7hg/s400/DoodleDemmy.co.uk_underconstruction.png" width="400" /></a></div>
That's right, <a href="http://doodledemmy.co.uk/">DoodleDemmy.co.uk</a> is up and running. Even though it's just an HTML skeleton at the moment, I finally have a place to direct potential clients and anyone who is interested in my work, instead of having to direct them to YouTube and explain/apologise for my various internet aliases. Over the coming weeks I'll be improving the look of the site. Initially I was going to use Wordpress to build the site, but the famous '5 minute instillation' is a bit misleading, as it doesn't include getting database management software nonsense to simple install the Wordpress builder in the first place. So for now, HTML will do fine. I feel a little gutted that I no longer have Dreamweaver (I couldn't exchange it for a new OS copy when I got my new computer) so all my HTML and CSS is going to have to be re-learned. I'm still looking for a decent (free) replacement, but for the moment I'm using sites like <a href="http://www.w3schools.com/">www.w3schools.com</a> to learn the basics once more. It has an HTML preview window used for individual lessons it teaches you, but it works with any HTML so you can just enter your website's code to see how it looks and tweak it as necessary.<br />

<p>
So this will be the first of many short single-topic blog posts, just so I don't spend another week trying to make one big fancy post.<br>
Here we go:
So I've been doing some more work on website designing
<p>
Here are some uses of the diamonds discussed in the last post:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CmEpPNgq1-o/T24GItf8JqI/AAAAAAAAA54/Pq6ut64QReg/s1600/BlueDiamond1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CmEpPNgq1-o/T24GItf8JqI/AAAAAAAAA54/Pq6ut64QReg/s400/BlueDiamond1.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_HBKfrAdZLg/T24GI3RnPmI/AAAAAAAAA6A/BHHSa8lfgtg/s1600/BlueDiamond2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_HBKfrAdZLg/T24GI3RnPmI/AAAAAAAAA6A/BHHSa8lfgtg/s400/BlueDiamond2.png" /></a></div>
<p>
These are only for a gallery page, with the picture name and thumbnail on the left, with the right 2 thirds of the window reserved for the actual image.
<br>
Of course the widths and positioning on these boxes will be dynamic, adjusting relative to the window size.
<p>
Another idea I felt that reflects a more doodly, anatomical feel. Although this is just a background, I like the charcoal and grey for the background. It adds some noise to the otherwise plain background. I was thinking that the buttons would represent something more akin to Little Big Planet.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DQm8OmBYPHE/T24GJIHXLLI/AAAAAAAAA6M/MCFfCo4b7nE/s1600/Musclebackground.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DQm8OmBYPHE/T24GJIHXLLI/AAAAAAAAA6M/MCFfCo4b7nE/s400/Musclebackground.png" /></a></div>
<br>
I recently found the works of <a href="http://www.bartleby.com/107/">Henry gray online</a>, which is a complete encyclopedia of beautiful anatomical drawings of the human body, and has always been somewhat inspirational to me.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xueS8PP6A1o/T24aO5ZgMVI/AAAAAAAAA6c/lu-9ipfSHdQ/s1600/armMuscles_gray.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="131" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xueS8PP6A1o/T24aO5ZgMVI/AAAAAAAAA6c/lu-9ipfSHdQ/s400/armMuscles_gray.gif" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KFtiizc9Tyk/T24aPAVneGI/AAAAAAAAA6o/sPd41P77QEk/s1600/backMuscles_gray.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="254" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KFtiizc9Tyk/T24aPAVneGI/AAAAAAAAA6o/sPd41P77QEk/s400/backMuscles_gray.gif" /></a></div>
Seeing as a lot of my drawings involve some gross aliens or deformed bodies, these sorts of intricate organic drawings fit perfectly with the sort of art I'll be putting online.
<br>
On a side note, I've been playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution a lot and any anatomical drawing I see is always overlaid with robotic augmentations in my mind.
<p>
I've also done some rough designs for the propaganda billboards in <i>Kernel's</i> opening sequence:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisbJmJJT3kOV7GsZAcTkDOC5ndfv49oFXptcWFcWTQE50Dd2Ly3yOYKUv47EMQncOKJSCePnfay73ckwzH0XCXBmayb-GUj6et3EKcrow74OgUs_FTgiGNUHAwubsLKgxCEjVKi02FYo4/s1600/billboards1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisbJmJJT3kOV7GsZAcTkDOC5ndfv49oFXptcWFcWTQE50Dd2Ly3yOYKUv47EMQncOKJSCePnfay73ckwzH0XCXBmayb-GUj6et3EKcrow74OgUs_FTgiGNUHAwubsLKgxCEjVKi02FYo4/s400/billboards1.png" /></a></div>
<p>
<center>Transitions to:</center>
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7iTkj1tv1aU9uNeJBLDi8IDudUOezMx1NZAUn08bsKeJggAkAFPUCrvAQfUYS6kSfcO7Wq5THZ-7M36KG4C_TbkRxCaTgEzQj2-3e193q9lBRPLzhkI9i_-9I3R5PMIp9SPs13vgt2NI/s1600/billboards2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7iTkj1tv1aU9uNeJBLDi8IDudUOezMx1NZAUn08bsKeJggAkAFPUCrvAQfUYS6kSfcO7Wq5THZ-7M36KG4C_TbkRxCaTgEzQj2-3e193q9lBRPLzhkI9i_-9I3R5PMIp9SPs13vgt2NI/s400/billboards2.png" /></a></div>
<br>
Once I've finished the final images, I'll add some roughing up, such as rips and stains to show that these billboards have been in place for a long time.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-4440132806497664742012-02-27T15:48:00.000-08:002012-02-27T15:48:00.693-08:00Designing a website.It's becoming time to consider advertising myself, seeing as the course is nearly over and I'll need to get a job that I enjoy.<br>
That, of course, is animating.
<p>
I won't be putting too much effort into that yet. I'll start in about 2 weeks when the Dissertation is handed in (scary). Until then, I have found websites with a look/features that look good and inspire me.
<p>
<a href="http://www.littlebigplanet.com/en/">LittleBig Planet</a>
<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uy9oy6AxHrI/T0rYvPE3o2I/AAAAAAAAA4M/OJbYo3zrVcE/s1600/littlebig%2Bplanet_small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="200" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uy9oy6AxHrI/T0rYvPE3o2I/AAAAAAAAA4M/OJbYo3zrVcE/s400/littlebig%2Bplanet_small.png" /></a></div>
<p>
What I like about this website (and the LittleBig Planet games) is the simple, graphic nature of the buttons in contrast to the busy, detailed background. The block colours make the site (and game) easy to navigate.<br>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="315" src=" http://gameolio.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Little-Big-Planet-2-03.jpg " height="214" /></span>
</center>
<br>
What I don't like, however, is how busy the website page is, and I'm not a fan of lots of bright colours. It is also in a blog-style layout, and would be no good for an online gallery.
<p>
<a href="http://www.alexries.com/">Alex Reis</a>
<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-at3DFW1nzio/T0rYzU8G2LI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/sZK2kQVEFpI/s1600/AlexReis_small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="200" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-at3DFW1nzio/T0rYzU8G2LI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/sZK2kQVEFpI/s400/AlexReis_small.png" /></a></div>
<center>© Alex Reis 2012</center>
<p>
Alex Reis is a digital painter of aliens and animals, and is a big source of inspiration. His website is a dedicated gallery of his art. The gallery itself has preview thumbnails along the left edge, and the background is flat black, which I guess is to avoid distractions from the paintings.<br>
I like the opening splash image which acts as a link to the main gallery, although I was disappointed to find out that the image doesn't randomise.
<p>
Other, non-internet, inspirations will include:<br>
Deus Ex
<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yqbA2RmsCzw/T0rZ1gb9O8I/AAAAAAAAA4k/ziwtcJNq5wQ/s1600/deus_ex_hr_code_thumb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="226" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yqbA2RmsCzw/T0rZ1gb9O8I/AAAAAAAAA4k/ziwtcJNq5wQ/s400/deus_ex_hr_code_thumb.jpg" /></a></div>
<p>
What I like about Deus Ex's <a href="http://www.wmconnolley.org.uk/bees/DSCN6624-bee-close_1200x1200.JPG">visual style</a> is the simplicity of the interfaces. One can blur their vision to an incredible degree and still be able to navigate the interface. It feels as if this method of presentation is making a comeback now that the world is sick of overly shiny and busy buttons and menus from the late 90's. It also fits the graphic look I want for my website and includes the simple interface over a blurred, busy background. There is also the simple colour scheme. It gives the game an identity. I was thinking of blue for my website. Because I really like blue and black. It's kinda my thing.
<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Dm8X7cj2O0E/T0rZ5Vz8JFI/AAAAAAAAA4w/jZK-BzSSoSY/s1600/deus_ex_hr_code_thumb_blue.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="226" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Dm8X7cj2O0E/T0rZ5Vz8JFI/AAAAAAAAA4w/jZK-BzSSoSY/s400/deus_ex_hr_code_thumb_blue.png" /></a></div>
<center> Website, DONE! </center>
<p>
While I won't be going for the shattered triangles, I do like the falling particles in the Deus Ex menu backgrounds. Seeing as HTML 5 is coming into popularity I figure I could try it out. Maybe falling squares or diamonds or something? I'd really like to have some extra level of interactivity on my website, and these things can't be too difficult to code, right?<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2A8irMrFU8M/T0wUcLeKKtI/AAAAAAAAA5U/MqjKdvTiptw/s1600/Ghirahim.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="283" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2A8irMrFU8M/T0wUcLeKKtI/AAAAAAAAA5U/MqjKdvTiptw/s400/Ghirahim.png" /></a></div>
<center>This guy likes diamonds</center>
<p>
One of my favourite internet toys is the <a href="http://bio-bak.nl/">Bio-Bak</a>, an enormous web page with a fun little game built in. I discovered it years ago. It has lots of cool coded particles and sliding effects and whatnot. <br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l_U4SZIicvk/T0rowotoSxI/AAAAAAAAA5I/TL1D_PqiPu8/s1600/Biobak.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="199" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l_U4SZIicvk/T0rowotoSxI/AAAAAAAAA5I/TL1D_PqiPu8/s400/Biobak.png" /></a></div>
<center> I never said it made sense </center>
<br>
I wouldn't make anything as extravagant as the Bio-Bak, but cool little toys <a href="http://tane.us/">like this</a> must be pretty simple to create, but are surprisingly satisfying.
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BUKxBK60fhg/T0rng4c7seI/AAAAAAAAA48/aLoAsbZVB2U/s1600/shadesSatisfy.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="229" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BUKxBK60fhg/T0rng4c7seI/AAAAAAAAA48/aLoAsbZVB2U/s400/shadesSatisfy.png" /></a></div>
<center> Satisfy me! </center>
<p>
I wouldn't focus the website on these toys, and I don't want them to distract people from the actual content of the site, but I feel like a little bit of interactivity and 'wow' visual tricks could attract people to it.
<br> Now that I've finally purchased a web domain, the pressure is on to design this thing and get it up and running.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-76021777606583973082012-02-20T18:32:00.000-08:002012-02-20T18:38:44.061-08:00The masochism of late-night brain befrazzlement.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<center> 2:30 AM </center>
<p>
After a few months of being good and going to bed at a half-decent time, I've started doing all-nighters again.<br>
I know I shouldn't. Every time. I will always regret it in the morning after 3 hours sleep and the taste of stale coke and tea in my mouth.
<p>
So why do I do it?<p>
As I work late into the night, listening to Deadmau5, Daft Punk and in tonight's case, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/SYRSAmusic">this guy</a>- time stops. The concept of the impending deadline vanishes. I have all the time in the universe to finish what I'm doing.
Perhaps it simply reminds me of my younger days, spending hours and hours creating art and animation, regularly and <i>willingly</i> working until the early morning. Getting up in time for school didn't matter when I was crafting my one-man masterpieces.
<br>Despite my love for this animation course, and all the people in it, I still sometimes wonder if I was more productive animation-wise before I came here, when animation was just a hobby and not a career choice.<br>
Anyway.
<p>
Perhaps the enjoyment of these all-nighters is the feeling of accomplishment; that you've won the battle against biology to meet your goal. The relentless drive of the mind has won over the failings and protests of the body. And a battle it is. The best comparison I can think of is carrying a heavy sack of chicken feed on your back. You know, that thing people do all the time.
<br>It's relatively easy to stay upright and carry it as long as you put the effort into balancing. If you don't put in the extra effort into balance, your strength lifting the sack is wasted and you come crashing down, spraying your chicken dinner all over the ground. What I'm trying to say here is that it's not the actual working that is the hard part for me, it's constantly keeping my stamina up to stay awake. One slip and <i> boom </i> I'm asleep. This to me is the closest thing I can describe as the 'extra gear'.
<p>
The fruits of this extra gear?
<br>
Well:
<br>
After making the 'Ice Cold' logo for Red Bar Radio, I felt inspired to make another piece of art for another favourite podcast, Distorted View.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajRiKgbHTJz3VKph6013x0GhO5_Ad0_cM9t7dYgZA56jl4rDAFMBHJ6Bsx-TS7vgfLNOnF4ngkMVbvMzliqRpx0KVvZrjtSWiutiXe3uVO4u3i_mhU2TivkTK9IWRWQU_vYhBTOoFcNM/s1600/DV_pedoBear_Wmark.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="350" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajRiKgbHTJz3VKph6013x0GhO5_Ad0_cM9t7dYgZA56jl4rDAFMBHJ6Bsx-TS7vgfLNOnF4ngkMVbvMzliqRpx0KVvZrjtSWiutiXe3uVO4u3i_mhU2TivkTK9IWRWQU_vYhBTOoFcNM/s400/DV_pedoBear_Wmark.png" /></a></div>
<center> Don't judge me by my choice of podcasts.</center>
<p>
The basic idea was to have the show's host, Tim Henson, in a <a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/pedobear">Pedobear</a> outfit beckoning children in. His idea was to have the advertisement he described on school buses and posters, in response to a news story of Texas schools selling advertising space on the property.
<p>
On a subject of less ambiguous morals, I have compiled and combined the <a href="http://fav.me/d4qb6p0">Fentil doodles</a> and <a href="http://fav.me/d4qb88t">EVA doodles</a> in my sketchbook from the last two months.
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src=" http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/050/e/9/fentil_vertebrate_doodles_by_purple_plasmid-d4qb6p0.png " height="1200" /></span>
</center>
<P>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src=" http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/050/d/7/e_v_a_doodles_by_purple_plasmid-d4qb88t.png " height="1500" /></span>
</center>
<p>
Hm, not as much as I'd expected.<br>
I still have yet to combine the <i>Machina</i> and <i>Weird</i> doodles, but those will be for another post, soon.
<p>
Now back to this darned dissertation.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-48351013562589385202012-02-19T16:47:00.000-08:002012-02-19T16:48:30.793-08:00Yet another backlogSigh.
<p>
I really need to get into the habit of writing smaller posts more frequently.<br>
This is going to be a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_joke">long one</a>.<br>
<p>
First thing's first - <a href="http://www.thepixelcrush.com/">Kernel</a>
<p>
As semi-self appointed animation director, my job is to give Kernel it's animation style and direction. After consulting with Olly, the real director, we came upon the possibility of an almost stop-motion feel for the animation, especially after this first animated shot. With the amazing work that everyone has put into modeling, texturing, rigging and lighting, it certainly would be an interesting way to go.
<iframe width="600" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RcmoOjWIBN4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<center> Impressed? </center>
<p>
The discussion also reminded me of how the Prawns were animated in District 9, with very little use of 'tweening' and lots of subtle keyframes. This apparently gives them a more organic look. See for yourself.
<iframe width="600" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Mq4i8XlWilQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<p>
He also suggested films such as the Backwater Gospel:
<iframe width="600" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/vVkDrIacHJM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br>
<center> How many times is this going to feature on my blog? </center>
<p>
And Little Tombstone:
<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/34655941?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" width="601" height="338" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/34655941">LITTLE TOMBSTONE - ESMA 2011</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user9138429">Little Tombstone</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>
To use as inspiration.
<p>
I'll be compiling a little information package with this information and more for the future animators on this project in order to keep a consistent look throughout the film. I finally feel useful.
<p>
Now, <a href="http://downtheholeinyourhead.blogspot.com/">H0le</a>:<p>
I haven't been working on H0le as much as I should be.<br>
I have, however, finished the rough animation for that climbing shot:
<iframe width="600" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rMztvzsf0Io" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<p>
This was my first real attempt at ToonBoom, and I feel that this slowed me right down. I've decided to do the rough animation in Flash. I am much more familiar with Flash and this rough animation can be exported as an image sequence that can then be imported into ToonBoom for the cleanup artists.
<p>
Now onto some personal business...
<p>
One of the regular podcasts that I listen to is <a href="http://redbarradio.net/">Red Bar Radio</a>. The host called out for fans to design a logo for a joke drink 'Mike's Ice Cold Diarrhea', which was to be put on t-shirts and other items. The 'brief' was simply to resemble old root beer labels.<br>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src=" https://p.twimg.com/AlvZarVCEAI5YvW.png " height="686" /></span>
</center>
<br> Here's my attempt. Sadly I submitted the design a day too late and was not chosen, although I was given positive feedback by others of the Red Bar Radio community.<br>
This is the first time I've ever worked on anything for t-shirts, and I had to learn a few things, such as having to use the half-tone dot effect for shadows. It was a fun experiment, even if I didn't get picked.
<p>
<p>
I've also been playing Zelda recently, and I noticed some cool effects.<br>
The first from Skyward Sword is this cool diamond-shiny effect.
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_A7QnXl8kJPwqVYEDDvYnqfVyyfm8nabFQTVdgsDKryoOSj-SRIo3o5xHxmSCQi-Lf6il4kO14OuYGcpvcjVuG8N0dxr6ZpwuxuMfmlswQd8xpMLlZD-rf4V2_7bnfmNiB3oq7kiQQe3n/s1600/Girahim+final+form+battle.jpg " height="292" /></span>
</center>
<br>
So I tried to emulate this effect thanks to ol' Leonard, here.
It seemed to be simply the matter of plugging a rotated checker-board pattern into the eccentricity of the shader and boom!<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfO5Q0ALkkT8U-TrVGzTnrrT4qprEsouJfVcu9U6XosOaFxUYC4s3bEmM3I4-8FoCS9oquZdd8geZs4WX7VSltypsa2mWspa-tfhdFMkrQRFeBhY4A56tp3vLGUOQzy6J9pSSjYKZYz3I/s1600/LeonardGhirahim.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfO5Q0ALkkT8U-TrVGzTnrrT4qprEsouJfVcu9U6XosOaFxUYC4s3bEmM3I4-8FoCS9oquZdd8geZs4WX7VSltypsa2mWspa-tfhdFMkrQRFeBhY4A56tp3vLGUOQzy6J9pSSjYKZYz3I/s400/LeonardGhirahim.png" /></a></div><br>
<center> Old Man Ghirahim. </center>
<p>
In another attempt to copy something Zelda-y, I wanted to have a quick go at this effect in Twilight Princess:
<br><center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="596" src=" http://wordpress.ed.pacificu.edu/brandyselby/files/2011/11/Screen-Shot-2011-11-28-at-8.01.43-PM.png " height="331" /></span>
</center>
<br>
here, the darkest areas and shadows are transparent, leaving only illuminated areas visible. This gives a lovely ghost effect, reminding me of the technique used for projecting ghosts on theater stages, known as "Pepper's Ghost".
<p>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="485" src=" http://www.prairieghosts.com/smoke2.jpg " height="304" /></span>
</center>
<center> The technique </center>
<p>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="400" src=" http://members.shaw.ca/clawback/Peppers/peppers2.jpg " height="300" /></span>
</center>
<center> The effect </center>
<p>
So I had a little play around with Maya's nodes and did some connecting on the faithful Platehead model:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUfT46KaVtdIGN_dtuLDD5_UKHFc_1EE0-pLF1aWOO9w2U0Q6CEXOeHjZMx6XopgMM98bzy-YM0WBq_cH4ZwEi9s1JE9YnjwtFUFrRvXSZnAW7AdWrN7bQwLl2MBVi4s65SR-8qttc80M/s1600/facing+ratio+transparency.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUfT46KaVtdIGN_dtuLDD5_UKHFc_1EE0-pLF1aWOO9w2U0Q6CEXOeHjZMx6XopgMM98bzy-YM0WBq_cH4ZwEi9s1JE9YnjwtFUFrRvXSZnAW7AdWrN7bQwLl2MBVi4s65SR-8qttc80M/s400/facing+ratio+transparency.png" /></a></div>
<br>
This one used the sampler.Info.node>Camera facing ratio (used to make simple rim lights)and connected it to the transparency.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS4UChDq1PLbrowNrP-DxTIM0RQckLdQaFetKKEYk5Dk9sPeplSS5hTvbpcVsRxPwHXGWmiIfNgfTfB0wgdfB6h9OIaWELfbfhQqic5HTBbPMXcfRw7UpvP1ulp8Pn-iK2hw3-HMNffh4/s1600/SurfaceLuminance_jelly2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS4UChDq1PLbrowNrP-DxTIM0RQckLdQaFetKKEYk5Dk9sPeplSS5hTvbpcVsRxPwHXGWmiIfNgfTfB0wgdfB6h9OIaWELfbfhQqic5HTBbPMXcfRw7UpvP1ulp8Pn-iK2hw3-HMNffh4/s400/SurfaceLuminance_jelly2.png" /></a></div>
<br>
Here I plugged Surface Luminance (duh) into transparency, which has a much better effect and is more physically resembling of the Pepper's ghost technique.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuCcXwdW1G5Lb1F28874XuLyNbs3kL_Epp7-EjRyBCAMmACKHKHlHRko760xJhxkhNcnAvs1ynI9AhsNrdj1yj2WPG0P5uf7aNBlVfJhKal2RDBa_qZRzH2TonNegnI5_oXEnXHikhMXA/s1600/SurfaceLuminance_jelly3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuCcXwdW1G5Lb1F28874XuLyNbs3kL_Epp7-EjRyBCAMmACKHKHlHRko760xJhxkhNcnAvs1ynI9AhsNrdj1yj2WPG0P5uf7aNBlVfJhKal2RDBa_qZRzH2TonNegnI5_oXEnXHikhMXA/s400/SurfaceLuminance_jelly3.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEOL6atU5ucrtC4mM4QloLXVEzRXc5YQwmYRsDMGH_NO3NALSjnlwM_VYljQOonWQJwyD8Z3eRoD4sT7nkKivdVRkXuSNhv1QjzMojT7qaytH41fEbGdKngZarMCwkkvpdjFh6tVbYIuU/s1600/SurfaceLuminance_glass.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEOL6atU5ucrtC4mM4QloLXVEzRXc5YQwmYRsDMGH_NO3NALSjnlwM_VYljQOonWQJwyD8Z3eRoD4sT7nkKivdVRkXuSNhv1QjzMojT7qaytH41fEbGdKngZarMCwkkvpdjFh6tVbYIuU/s400/SurfaceLuminance_glass.png" /></a></div>
<br>
Some tweaking and different angles.
<p>
What I like about copying techniques used in Zelda games is that they're cheap. The Wii is a runt in terms of processing power, and so Nintendo can't afford to use fancy shaders for everything and have to find the effect another way.<br>
I feel that it is always best to find the most economical solution, and being able to optimise your work can only be a good thing. Perhaps that's why I have so much love and respect for low poly games. It could just be nostalgia, but there seems to be a certain consciousness and deliberateness in the models. Every extra poly is expensive, and trying to keep to these limits turns it into a much more creative process. The same can be said for any other artistic medium.
<br>
Challenge fuels creativity, and without it, we'd still be a bunch of sponges and worms drifting in an ocean.
<p>
Finally, here's some drawings that I done do did:
<p>
<a href="http://fav.me/d4ombcy">Free Sword</a>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src="http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/035/9/b/free_sword_by_purple_plasmid-d4ombcy.png " height="1030" /></span>
</center><br>
Fi, from Skyward Sword talks a whole unskippable lot. She lives in your sword. That is the joke. Hilarious.
<p>
<a href="http://fav.me/d4nywvc">Breaching Octopus</a>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="555" src=" http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/029/d/3/breaching_octopus_by_purple_plasmid-d4nywvc.png " height="347" /></span>
</center><br>
This is from a dream I had a while ago. I was filming the giant swimming octopus in the background, when a pod of smaller octopus began swimming alongside my speedboat like dolphins.
<p>
<a href="http://purple-plasmid.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4nnnst">Marker Madness</a>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="467" src=" http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/026/7/f/marker_madness_by_purple_plasmid-d4nnnst.jpg " height="668" /></span>
</center>
<p><br>
It's been a while since I've used my markers. It feels nice to shade stuff sometimes.
<p>
Now prepare for a WHOLE mess'a drawings!<br>
In the next post. This one is already too long. Plus the drawings need cleaning up.<p>
Be ready!Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-71257916850739389672012-01-20T15:13:00.000-08:002012-01-20T15:15:28.293-08:00Some progressleonard brain walk.
<center>
<iframe width="600" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/PbrdjwSA6pg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</center>
<p>
I'm somewhat happy with this, as I haven't been animating in 3D for a while.
<p>
H0le climb test
<center>
<iframe width="600" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AHZoOnN714o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<p>
</center>
Now, this was something I sort of did as a quick test. I was told that the climb looks too easy, that there isn't enough effort in the movement. I can see that.
<p>
Now, I have been coming up with some more ideas for this <i>Machina</i> video game idea.<br>
The enemies in the game have a rank system. These ranks are indicated by floating halos above their bodies.
<center>
<p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHLb1jWeZAIL02W3vmOb9ynDFMUvixedFVXchBykPiWfeis0iU21dhO-6TfmRsp1yU31rckSThnztb2CotMf407c8pLVFq_uDRfr3nOWXb3zfU6Owci2khNdPU-RTHoZYQlw12u6ajcG4/s1600/TriHalo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHLb1jWeZAIL02W3vmOb9ynDFMUvixedFVXchBykPiWfeis0iU21dhO-6TfmRsp1yU31rckSThnztb2CotMf407c8pLVFq_uDRfr3nOWXb3zfU6Owci2khNdPU-RTHoZYQlw12u6ajcG4/s400/TriHalo.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG1xEX5Cu1mIlZ19BAMyPeLOL7F0QjrBIJT16WSUUnJ-vQU4EJYAnz1Z7LvJycGahkQYD_WNmrwNg-F-t9O09mtFcAL_WWxx2V8W8IXx8gqleFkF2m8iiOtoI8mT07H3ur24d1VHweh2s/s1600/Machina+halo+idea+Dan+Emmerson.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="133" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG1xEX5Cu1mIlZ19BAMyPeLOL7F0QjrBIJT16WSUUnJ-vQU4EJYAnz1Z7LvJycGahkQYD_WNmrwNg-F-t9O09mtFcAL_WWxx2V8W8IXx8gqleFkF2m8iiOtoI8mT07H3ur24d1VHweh2s/s400/Machina+halo+idea+Dan+Emmerson.png" /></a></div>
</center><p>
Killing the enemies causes their halos to fall to the ground which the player can collect for...something.
<p>
There are also some game mechanics in the works somewhere.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-16922036901704811482012-01-16T04:20:00.000-08:002012-01-16T04:25:06.465-08:00New yearAs usual, when I go home I have no computer, so I got no work done over the holidays. <br>
The work I did do, however, was dissertation-related.
<p>
My topic is something like "<i>-Clever title-</i>:How Video Games Are The Optimum Media For Horror".<br>
I've been looking into topics like Agency (the feeling of possession of an action)
<p>
Also, in my scare spare time, I have been working on a secret project.<br>
All I can divulge is the tentative title, <i>Machina</i>, and this colour/style test.
<center>
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sX3Nxkjwj4A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</center>
<p>
This spinning diamond is an example of the sort of colour scheme and shine effects that I want in the project. I may even have spinning diamonds, too.<br>
The project itself is still very early in development, so I'll need to do a bit more work on the story/characters before divulging much more, although I have been playing about with the <a href="http://unity3d.com/unity/">Unity Engine</a> - if that's any kind of hint.
<p>
<b> Games Corner </b>
<p>
<h2>AMY</h2><br>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src=" http://www.videogamesblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/amy-video-game-artwork.jpg " height="310" /></span>
</center>
It's just...awful.
<p>
Some major complaints for me were:
<li>Poor framerate (even when NOTHING is happening). 1</li>
<li>Floaty camera controls .</li>
<li>Frustrating combat. 2</li>
<li>Loose movement controls (The 'forward' action on the thumbstick is misaligned, so you end up walking in circles).</li>
<li>Awful framerate (when ANYTHING happens).</li>
<li>Tooth shine. 3</li>
<li>Bad writing and voice acting. 4</li>
<li>The above remove any/all immersion and as such, the game is not scary in the slightest. 5</li>
<p>
<li>Poor framerate (even when NOTHING is happening). 1</li>
1. This makes no sense to me. My hypothesis is that the game is poorly optimised. I noticed full reflections in the protagonist's eyes, something which not only makes her look weird, but doesn't even need to be there. We never see her eyes close-up except for the rare few cut-scenes, so it doesn't add any emotional value or ease of empathy. <p>
<li>Floaty camera controls .</li>
2. I understand that this is supposed to be a survival horror game, and that an awkwardness and unfamiliarity in the character's fighting style add to the tension and feeling of vulnerability, however, combat in AMY doesn't add to any sort of tension. On occasion, the camera flips around and shows the impact from a different angle, which would seem to add to some sort of cool effect, but the cutaway is so short that it is just jarring and disorienting. <p>
3.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAb6M3qhWXaIpCmgs9rtNmBkDDpslvwuzfnsUh9sbhB0gPEzhORlqQEpBLTJN1Sd6yld-QK7gfqU2GDeAp3l4XeyzH_dVa8kelsbe2cBv0xoEGoyL_oUrIFu1SMo2dgDb9DOtIrt7eJTg/s1600/Lana_toothShine.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="209" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAb6M3qhWXaIpCmgs9rtNmBkDDpslvwuzfnsUh9sbhB0gPEzhORlqQEpBLTJN1Sd6yld-QK7gfqU2GDeAp3l4XeyzH_dVa8kelsbe2cBv0xoEGoyL_oUrIFu1SMo2dgDb9DOtIrt7eJTg/s400/Lana_toothShine.png" /></a></div>
<br><center> Also note the super-shiny eyes. </center>
<p>
4. Horror films and games in the past have always been a little underbudget (indeed, low budgets are what made the cult horror films such as <i>The Thing</i> and <i>Alien</i> the successes that they were) and in most horror movies (and games),the acting or writing often suffer.
<center>
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-zldweeknFk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</center>
<center> Something <i>Resident Evil 4</i> happily continued</center>
<p>
Video games generally suffer from poor writing and voice acting as it is, so it should have came to no surprise that AMY's is doubly poor.
<p>
5. This is something that I am addressing in my dissertation. Horror games (as the name suggests) should include elements of <i>horror</i>. This doesn't mean just putting in zombies and calling it a day. <i>Call of Duty: Black ops</i> has zombies in it, and that's the most power-fantasy non-horror game you can get. Even <i>The Legend of Zelda:Skyward Sword</i> has zombies in it. Horror requires a lot more than just a rotting antagonist. It requires atmosphere and empathy - something AMY's flickery frame rate and awful character performance removes entirely.
<p>
Now, perhaps AMY gets better later on in the game, but I honestly couldn't even get past the first chapter. I even had <a href="http://www.thepixelcrush.com/">Olly</a> come over and try it, too. He managed to get a little further than I.<br>
The worst part of the whole problem is the disappointment. I was looking forward to this game, and how could I not when AMY was marketed as "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ico">Ico</a>, but with zombies". I was also hoping for another good horror game to add to my analysis for my dissertation. It certainly made the cut, but only as an example of how NOT to make a horror game.

<h2>The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword</h2>
<p>

</center>
<p>
I am a massive Zelda nerd. Like an allergy, it only sufaces and consumes my life with when a new Zelda game comes out.<br>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="409" src=" http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/318/9/e/urm_curmum_zuldur_by_nebulafire-d32vrwm.jpg " height="511" /></span>

<center>Thanks <a href="http://nebulafire.deviantart.com/art/Urm-Curmum-Zuldur-186240262">DeviantArt</a> </center>
<p>
So I was pretty excited for Skyward Sword.<br>
I have a lot to say about it and a lot to analyse, so I'll probably leave it for a separate blog post or something, but I wanted to talk about it a little bit.
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="620" src=" http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/196040-header.jpg" height="350" /></span>
</center>
<br>
<center>Go run and get it.</center>
<p>
The wiggly Wii controls take a little getting used to, such as aligning the Wii remote in order to get the slice-y directions right. Another problem I had is that the pointer (used for navigating the menus and aiming weapons) doesn't use the actual Wii I.R. pointer.<br>
Instead they use the Wii Motion Plus to guess where you're pointing. It's fairly accurate, but the cursor moves very slowly across the screen, and often it becomes misaligned which requires the player to re-align the pointer. <br>
The game looks surprisingly nice, despite some ugly close-up textures put through the painterly filter.<br>
I feel like Zelda games haven't advanced beyond those on the GBA, with a very small library of static looping animations and text boxes. Also, some voice acting wouldn't go astray. The worry is that giving Link a voice would ruin the experience of the games. I don't think we're asking for Link to have a voice, but for everyone else to speak. It makes them feel like actual people, and it's hard to empathise for an inexpressive looping animation and a text box.
<br>Look what it did for the <i>Metroid Prime</i> series, with 1 and 2 relying solely on text boxes and the occasional vocal sound from one of the few NPC's. <i>Metroid Prime 3: Corruption</i>, however, has full voice acting for all of the NPC's - an enormous departure from the rest of the series. but it worked. Samus remained her silent, stoic self, but the world around her felt alive.
<p>

</center>
<center>Then Nintendo took it too far...</center>
<p>
I'll save the rest for another post, which will also have some art, I'm sure. I do have lots of nice things to say about it, but it's easier to get the bad things out first.<p>
Bye bye.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-71271262933010187492011-12-13T05:20:00.000-08:002011-12-15T11:09:32.337-08:00Sorry. I've been busy, alright!? Here, it's a big'n.There's a lot of ground to cover.
<p>
<H2><u> Fentil: Another Life </u></H2>
<p>
So after the sweatbox, I have found out that <i> Fentil: Another Life </i> wasn't picked for production.
<br />
Sort of.
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/C2kwtWQWuw4" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
Instead of green lighting the entire film, we've been okay'd to produce one shot - one extremely realistic, detailed shot. The issue now is to decide which shot will be the most profound.
<p>
<a title="View Fentil: Another Life - Production Bible on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/75796131/Fentil-Another-Life-Production-Bible" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;">Fentil: Another Life - Production Bible</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/75796131/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-21638fi0etrfliw560xh" data-auto-height="true" data-aspect-ratio="0.707514450867052" scrolling="no" id="doc_53806" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">(function() { var scribd = document.createElement("script"); scribd.type = "text/javascript"; scribd.async = true; scribd.src = "http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/embed_code/inject.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(scribd, s); })();</script>
<p>
While I understand that <i> Another Life </i> was probably too ambitious, due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to add to the animatic (using feedback from James Henry, a helpful script writer who came to talk to us). These additions would have added the much needed drama and tension to make the 'baby needs to eat' story tangible.
<br>
While they may not be used, here are those extra frames in context.
<p>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src="http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/349/1/7/unused_storyboard_shots_by_purple_plasmid-d4j5zug.png" height="5100" /></span>
</center>
<p>
This would probably have been a much more ambitious project, and the production bible includes the spear dropper and octopoid information.
<br>
As for deciding which shot to choose, I really like the Spear Dropper swooping down. The problem is that we have none of those aliens rigged or even modelled. From a realistic standpoint, it has to be one of the Platehead shots.
<p/>
Oh well.
<p/>
I've lately been following a guy named <a href="http://gregbroadmore.blogspot.com/">Greg Broadmore</a>, who does lots of cool art and works for Weta. He has worked on concept art for District 9, King Kong and other films.
<br />
<center>

</center>
<br />
He's basically amazing.
<br />
He also has a project called <b>Dr Grordbort's</b> Which is a steampunk vision of old-timey hunters going to other planets to hunt for trophies. Recently, Media Design School in New Zealand has taken on his world and designs and have made a short film of it.

<center>This is probably my favourite of his aliens. Look for it at OO:16. I really like its legs.</center>
<p/>
Here's the teaser.

<br />
This is what I want Another Life's shot to be like. Pretty.
<p>
<H2><u>
Rigging
</u></H2>
On the same topic of work, I've been doing some rigging for <a href="http://www.thepixelcrush.com/">Olly's project: Kernel</a>. I only really have one character to rig (Leonard, the old man) so I can really focus on making him spectacular.
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhglgIM3Ejilgrr7sgCB_Dl16onJftb5cOplrzBl08fWZ3cCXypz12-hGLzEr9m6DaCkqIPZUeVo24M79tf8Gtb45BfTVRflrzbcWjvbK1Rq29rNit2MZWzobt_Yt8ABrGa86ex7UpCTK4/s1600/LeonardRigTestPose.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="294" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhglgIM3Ejilgrr7sgCB_Dl16onJftb5cOplrzBl08fWZ3cCXypz12-hGLzEr9m6DaCkqIPZUeVo24M79tf8Gtb45BfTVRflrzbcWjvbK1Rq29rNit2MZWzobt_Yt8ABrGa86ex7UpCTK4/s400/LeonardRigTestPose.png" /></a></div>
<center> Fabulous </center>
<br>
So far we have:
<UL>
<li>Leg IK's</li>
<li>Heel Peel</li>
<li>Tip Toe</li>
<li>Heel pivot</li>
<li>Toe Pivot</li>
<li>Toe Tap</li>
<li>Back rotation controls</li>
</UL>
I'm also planning on putting in foot roll (side to side) and toe splay (as Leonard is barefoot). I'll also be implementing my lovely eyelid flicky mechanism.
<iframe width="550" height="403" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sjVA5v2uYSU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br>
I'll also be looking into rigging his luscious beard.
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="400" src=" http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xAoYy3uiJtQ/Ts6_b0PLxKI/AAAAAAAAA4o/pIbm5pibq9Y/s1600/Leonard+The+Tortoise.jpeg " height="225" /></span>
</center>
<center>
 Gorgeous
</center>
<p>
This is what I'll be working on until I go back to the parents' place for christmas, where I have no access to fancy animation software. Then it'll be more dissertation work.
<p>
<H2><u>
Dissertation Business
</u></H2>
<p>
Somewhat under-represented on this blog (and I suppose many other animator's blogs) is my Dissertation research (the capital 'D' shows how fearful I am of that word).<br>
My basic topic is horror, and my argument is something like <i>"Video games are the perfect medium for Horror, and are much more capable at scaring us than Film."</i><p>
Rolls off the tongue, I know.
<p>
So that's the basic premise, and my goal is to try and prove that video games have the capacity to scare us in ways which film never can and never will. I'll be addressing topics such as immersion, the psychology of horror, why we love to be scared, and the history of Horror as a genre. I will be analysing various horror films and games to get a decent scope. My major case studies, however, will be Silent Hill 2, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Dead Space 2, as I feel that combined, these games cover most of the horror spectrum. They are also pretty scary.
<p>
The most recent book I've been reading is <i>"Projected Fears: Horror Films and American Culture"</i> by Kendall R. Phillips.
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="200" src=" http://i43.tower.com/images/mm112176483/projected-fears-horror-films-american-culture-kendall-r-phillips-paperback-cover-art.jpg
" height="310" /></span>
</center>
<br>
It discusses how Horror is very much a contemporary genre, feeding on the fears and unrest in the society it is born from. Be it immigration of Eastern Europeans during <i>Dracula</i>'s theatrical release in the '30s, or the fear of advanced military flying machines during the '50s, where most alien invasion movies were born.
<br>
The <i>Dead Space</i> series also has this cultural resonance, as it deals with the repercussions of the separation of church and state, a fairly big issue in America at the moment.
<p>
Unfortunately, I've been neglecting this written work up until now, so I'll have to work my buns off over the holidays to get this under control.<br>
Wish me luck.

<br><center> This makes no sense. </center>
<p>
The skull-faced Tyrannosaur says it all,really. This isn't even slightly aimed to educate. It's just for the action. The bizarrely directed, convoluted action.
<p>
So, Dinosaur Revolution is essentially Discovery Channel's answer to Planet Dinosaur.<br>
Watching clips of Dinosaur Revolution has put Another Life into some perspective in terms of animation quality and performance, and has almost guaranteed that Another Life will be cut down, to ensure that the footage we make doesn't look like this - their animations are too cartoony and/or weighless and/or bad, and the dinosaurs act more like characters than creatures. This is an issue that will need to be kept in check with Another Life. Also it has taught me a lesson in shooting - Dinosaur Revolution is quite cinematic in its choice of camera angles - and falls flat as a documentary because of it. I have learned. Although, the models and compositing look lovely.
<br> The problem with cutting the film down to a manageable length is difficult - as the current narrative is already compressed enough. I may have to re-write the storyboard, removing the original story arc of "Poor Plateahead, that bright-eye is evil. Oh wait, no it isn't, it's just feeding its baby" and replace it with something more shallow, focusing more on the action. Perhaps beginning with the slow establishing landscape shots, and cutting right to the chase. (No pun intended, but you can laugh if you like).
<br> I have a newer idea for a shorter intro.

Doing these long, slow shots can save animation time while filling screen time. I was told in the production meeting earlier this week that these filler shots can be a life saver. As I said earlier, I may have to re-write the entire storyboard.
<p>
Speaking of Plateheads, I have received feedback from CG coach on their design.

This is the newest reference sheet I'm working on for the Platehead.

Apparently model needs more definition of muscles and skeletal system visible through the skin, which is a fair criticism. I'm grateful for the feedback, but I'm worried that I might get too caught up in their suggestions and alter the original designs.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<p>
One of the comments seemed to be that the proportions weren't T-rex enough - which is most likely because they probably aren't as educated on TailFeeder anatomy as I am (how could they be) so I will probably be spending a decent portion of my feedback discussions explaining how they work. It feels silly, but I think I'd rather they know that I chose to make certain parts a certain way, and not that I just don't understand anatomy.
<br> I also don't think that sentence makes too much sense.
<br> Alas.
<p>
Finally, on the topic of aliens, I recently discovered that Wayne Barlowe (very good artist) has a Wordpress website. I'm pretty sure this is new, but people on the internet tell me otherwise. Not only does he have great, strange designs, but the way he renders them with pencil is just beautiful and tangible.
<br>
<center>
<a href="http://waynebarlowe.wordpress.com/"><span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="600" src=" http://waynebarlowe.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/cropped-gd-1-10242.jpg " height="126" /></span>

<p>
Anyway, so <a href="http://waynebarlowe.wordpress.com/">this website</a> has some of his best work, including some of the concept art for AVATAR (Which I had no idea was actually in capitals)

Now then, back to writing a narrator script.

<br>
It's finally over.
<p>
I actually feel like the pitch for <i>Another Life</i> went pretty well, I certainly got some good feedback from the panel, as well as from fellow students. It feels good to have all that stress and worry behind us. There were some other good pitches that day, and some not so good. We'll have to wait for tomorrow to see.
<p>
For the pitch I pretended I was a XenoBiologist called Adden Mesa (my favourite pseudonym) and I was representing <i>Triple Dash</i>, the film company to be producing the alien wildlife documentary. Here's the covers of their 'previous work' which I used for the pitch...
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<p>
Okay, so that last one wasn't fresh for the pitch, it's an older piece I made a while ago for a similar idea, but for Titan. Behind Titan's Amber Veil may still be a reality, though it'll be a spare time venture.
<p>
I also tried using a lovely turnaround of a Tile Top plant:
<br> <center>
<iframe width="600" height="437" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XIn8HsIlVGw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</center>
<p>
However, something went wrong on the day and I had to use a still frame, instead. One of my favourite slides was the final frame, which has a page of 'sponsors' of the documentary.
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4PWQfi9C_K8UMzLkVW5gtXvr4905x6CGYgzDZJ8w8EldUHqcdXTgl0tIMk2kyQsNBianQmbdxYaDbu6-2iia2gFd8EIuWLFtDUYHS4DzF_fN8qKWFAiIEFXnGUKVzYlWxBpRme88CBec/s1600/Sponsor_v2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4PWQfi9C_K8UMzLkVW5gtXvr4905x6CGYgzDZJ8w8EldUHqcdXTgl0tIMk2kyQsNBianQmbdxYaDbu6-2iia2gFd8EIuWLFtDUYHS4DzF_fN8qKWFAiIEFXnGUKVzYlWxBpRme88CBec/s400/Sponsor_v2.png" /></a></div>
<br>
With reputable companies such as <a href="http://purple-plasmid.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d3lb1s8">Exo</a><a href="http://purple-plasmid.deviantart.com/art/ExoSkin-Basic-EVA-suit-207890567?q=gallery%3Apurple-plasmid%2F6930955&qo=40">Skin</a> - top manufacturers of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_suit">EVA suits</a>, and Genevieve Robotics - leading specialists in AI and robotics, the expedition was already very well supported. I like this frame because it let me really get embedded in the fiction.
<p>
Now, nothing to do with the pitch, but a while ago I stayed up all night/morning and did some doodles with biro. These were fun, as I abandoned my usual graphic, clean lines and got to draw in a much looser, scribbly style.
<p>

<br />
I also have a fairly decent draft of my "script" for my pitch:
<hr />
Good afternoon/morning, my name is Adden Mesa, I am a xeno-biologist and I am here to represent <i>Triple Dash</i>, a company which specializes in non-terran filming and documentaries.
<br />
We have a very successful film history, with 2 Europa dives under our belt and we are soon to be releasing our documentary on the Saturnine moon, Titan. And with award winning documentaries - such as "Mars' Red Fossils" and "Europa: The Frozen Ocean", we are certainly capable of taking on another challenge.
<p>
---Strange Sounds---
<p>
These are the sounds of yet another alien world.
Our newest project, which we call "Fentil: Another Life" , marks a milestone as the first alien wildlife documentary not filmed in our Solar System - documenting a new specimen of complex life in the universe around us. This is an tremendous opportunity.
<p>
Discovered in 2253, Fentil is one of 5 larger-than-Earth moons orbiting a huge rocky planet tentatively called Olympus. Fentil has gravity stronger than that of Earth, a thicker atmosphere, and once roughly every 4 Earth-months, it is eclipsed by Olympus, shrouding the moon in total darkness for weeks.
Scientists have been studying Fentil for almost half a decade and still the public know very little about this strange place. Like all of the great documentarians before us, our film aims to educate the public about the weird and wonderful things that nature can produce.
<br />
We are particularly interested in the mediterranean continent, studying the predatory behaviours of a ubiquitous 6-legged hunter that scientists have dubbed the "Bright-Eye", due to the two luminous spots on its head. We believe that these strange hunters lack jaws, instead using two tube-like probosces to 'core' flesh from its prey.
<br />
The entire area is covered in plants named by xeno-botanists as "Tile Tops" . Tile Tops have a hollow lattice trunk and a flat, drumskin-like blue cap. These plants are so strong that they support communities of grazers which feed on the photosynthetic cap. One of the most common groups of animals feeding here are the herbivorous "Platehead", named so because of its flat, circular head.
<p>
We wish to document the predator-prey relationship between the BrightEye and the Platehead. So far, all footage from Fentil has been classified for research, but we have been able to disclose a single photograph of these animals from a geologists' probe, and this image showing stalking behavior is what peaked our interest in these animals in particular.
<br />
As well as this photograph, I have personally drawn some field sketches of these aliens and other Fentil wildlife from one of the first human-borne expeditions to the moon.
<br />
In a similar manner to our previous documentary films, we will be aiming for entry to Film Festivals, with our target being the general public with an interest in seeing wildlife.
<p>
Our goal with 'Another Life' is to show the parallels between life on Fentil and that of Earth, and that despite the visual, anatomical and biomechanical differences, the same patterns of nature are universal.
<br />
Despite backing by many reputable companies, we are still hoping to gain additional funding to ensure that our expedition is successful and completed safely.
<hr />
<br />
What do you think? I'll also be dressed up in what hopefully will be a suit - I want to look convincing as...something. It'll be fun to pretend, and hopefully it'll make my pitch more memorable.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499481053487331612.post-19778840364672661332011-10-30T15:19:00.000-07:002011-10-30T15:19:43.510-07:00Space and ShieldThe upcoming pitch requires a 'wow' image to blow the audience away before we even get on stage. I believe this will be on the brochure.
<p>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="275" src="http://myfacewhen.com/i/481.jpg " height="200" /></span>
</center>
<center> This is the level of <i>mind-blowingosity</i> I'm aiming for. AT LEAST! </center>
<p>
My wow image is going to be based off of this basic composition I did in Maya with my blocky models.
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HTnMjYZx8pM/Tq3BZgebjGI/AAAAAAAAApQ/wqPO53-c7Ow/s1600/WOW_ref_smaller.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HTnMjYZx8pM/Tq3BZgebjGI/AAAAAAAAApQ/wqPO53-c7Ow/s400/WOW_ref_smaller.png" /></a></div>
<p>
I'll just trace over it and flesh out the creatures, the composition helping with perspective, colours etc. I'm also planning to add HUD from the probe camera (this explains the extremely close camera) and perhaps even a crack on the lens (which explains why the 'photo' will be blurry). I've foolishly left this until quite late and so there's a possibility of it not being finished in time for the hand-in. Failing that, I'll use one of my Pitch slides.
<br />
Such as these:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RjVigC3vkxw/Tq3CUlQ5TxI/AAAAAAAAApc/a89TWFgubwk/s1600/TripleDash_gridlogo_small.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RjVigC3vkxw/Tq3CUlQ5TxI/AAAAAAAAApc/a89TWFgubwk/s400/TripleDash_gridlogo_small.png" /></a></div>
<center> 'Triple Dash' is the company responsible for XenoWildlife films such as "Mars' red fossils" and "Europa: The Ocean Moon" </center>
<p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qAab_-O8rsg/Tq3CU5oE_dI/AAAAAAAAApo/Kgh5ShnyqpM/s1600/ANotherLife_logoRough.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qAab_-O8rsg/Tq3CU5oE_dI/AAAAAAAAApo/Kgh5ShnyqpM/s400/ANotherLife_logoRough.png" /></a></div>
<center> This one is in rough - that light-grey smudge is supposed to be the sun reflecting on Fentil's surface </center>
<p>
I really like that grey grid - which is good because I'll be using it a lot for the whole Fentil project.
<br />
So I should probably get on that whole <i>wow image </i> business!
<br />
<br />
Oh yeah, and completely nothing to do with anything - A few months ago I made this shield:
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="426" src=" http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/303/7/e/quick_shield_by_purple_plasmid-d4ehefa.png " height="406" /></span>
</center>
It was a bit of an exercise in using minimal textures. I could have done a more interesting and more complex object, but I figured that I'd start off small and simple.
<br />
It was vaguely based on the visual style of the upcoming <i>Skyward Sword </i> and one of the shields.
<p>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="450" src=" http://www.nintendobuzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Skyward-Sword-Banded-Shield.jpg" height="274" /></span>
</center>
<center> THIS shield in particular </center>
I'm somewhat looking forward to this game.
<p>
Now time for some things to watch:

<br />
I like how in their pitch they break down how they make their wonderfully stylized characters. It's a wonderful insight and I'm sure that they had a very
successful pitch. I also really like how they rigged their mouths, using independent sprites for the phonemes. They also included their animatic which is useful research for making my own animatic (see last post).

<br />
So I've made a <i>very</i> rough animatic for <b>Another Life</b>.
<p>
<iframe width="600" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/gOzM4FrlW1M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<p>
The sounds and even some of the shots are tentative for now, but it's just to get a grip on the timing of shots and pacing. It really feels like some of the shots are rushed to make the film under 3 minutes. As much as it pains me to do so, I'll definitely have to do some cutting down if I want the film to be properly paced.

<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="250" src=" http://myfacewhen.com/i/430.jpg" height="238" /></span>
<p>
 It saddens me
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</center>
<p>
To help me with figuring out the action and how to 'film' it, I'm making a diorama of the 'set'. For this I decided to have a little fun with it, and emulate something that I love (for some reason) in video games. Level dioramas:
<p>
<center>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IEwuLNU8m94/Tqsu7G5ocVI/AAAAAAAAAog/G3cAneNmfqU/s1600/NSMBWii_WorldSelect.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="224" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IEwuLNU8m94/Tqsu7G5ocVI/AAAAAAAAAog/G3cAneNmfqU/s400/NSMBWii_WorldSelect.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7dOi9po_soc/Tqsu7BZwGtI/AAAAAAAAAos/3V49836XXk4/s1600/super-mario-galaxy-2-images-28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="225" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7dOi9po_soc/Tqsu7BZwGtI/AAAAAAAAAos/3V49836XXk4/s400/super-mario-galaxy-2-images-28.jpg" /></a></div>
</center>
<p>
For some reason these little caricatures of environments capture my imagination.
<br />
So I'm doing one for the Another Life environment, just to get bearings of where everything is. It can also give <a href="http://olninyo.blogspot.com/">Olly</a> something to light while he waits for the actual sets.
<p>
One of the things I've been looking into for these sets is how to connect the Tile Tops.
Their caps grow in a circular fashion, however, seeing as they grow to the same height, the circular caps tessellate, and so can no longer remain circular. It took me a while to figure out how best to imagine how this would look, until recently I discovered that I didn't need to.
<br />
behold:
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="400" src=" http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/thumblarge_164/11842364475dI917.jpg " height="267" /></span>
</center>
<p>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="512" src=" http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7f/2-dimensional_foam.jpg " height="384" /></span>
</center>
<p>
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="480" src=" http://www.stylepark.com/db-images/cms/architecture-article/img/v301348_958_480_345-4.jpg " height="345" /></span>
</center>
<p>
BUBBLES!
<br />
Bubbles (and skin cells) fit the bill perfectly - and these have really helped with planning it out.
<br />
I already have a model of a <a href="http://purple-plasmid.deviantart.com/gallery/11064997#/d32pge5">Tile Top plant</a>:
<br />
<center>
<span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="512" src=" http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/316/0/1/tile_tops___factsheet_by_purple_plasmid-d32pge5.png" height="300" /></span>
</center>
<p>
But at this point it's redundant as there has been changes to the design (There's no 'petaling' on the blue cap - now it's just flat like a drum skin) but the final models will be rigged to an extent so that I can use the same model but adjust the cap shape to allow for the above tessellation, and to make up for the more slender species that border the plains that provide shelter for the Bright-Eye and its pup.
<p>

<center> How cute </center>
<p>
I will be making this in Maya soon enough.
<br />
Now back to working on the pitch...

Last night <a href="http://olninyo.blogspot.com/">Olly</a> said that he needed a rig where the eyelids move as the eyeball moves. It's never essential to a rig, but it does add a lovely subtlety which I think is noticeable. While I don't think he'll be using this model, I do think I did the job with the actual rig, despite some rushed weight binding at the edges.<br />
I'm pretty sure I over-did it with the eye-twitch. <br />
<br />
Over the last few weeks I have been working on Another Life, the Fentil wildlife documentary third year film thing. <br />
I am happy to say that I have a near-final storyboard <i>sans annotations</i> so there may be some abiguity as to what's going on, but it shows the basic unveiling of the story.
<br />
<a title="View AnotherLife_SB on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/70383406/AnotherLife-SB" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;">AnotherLife_SB</a><iframe class="scribd_iframe_embed" src="http://www.scribd.com/embeds/70383406/content?start_page=1&view_mode=list&access_key=key-udubnp3adbwits0kcir" data-auto-height="false" data-aspect-ratio="1.39816933638444" scrolling="no" id="doc_17721" width="600" height="489" frameborder="0"></iframe>
<br />
I'm in the midst of making a rough animatic with silly mouth-and-nose sound effects just for timing purposes. I've been advised to hold off making the animatic/storyboard too pretty until I've done more research into cinematographic methods of nature documentaries. <br />
<a href="http://www.dougallan.com/">Doug Allan</a> is a nature photographer who has won a fair few awards for his work, and it's definetely going to be part of my research. I've also been watching countless nature documentary series' such as<i> Life</i>, <i>Planet Dinosaur</i>,<i> Secret Lives </i>etc. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LeZucY0mcF8/TqgGZjKShpI/AAAAAAAAAoM/llJpBd_9_nU/s1600/O_David.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LeZucY0mcF8/TqgGZjKShpI/AAAAAAAAAoM/llJpBd_9_nU/s400/O_David.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<center>I've been overdosing on Attenborough.</center><br />
Fentil (or at least this film) needs a blog or website or something, and I should really stop putting it off. I did in fact start a blog for it <a href="http://fentildevelopment.blogspot.com/">(here)</a> but there's nothing there to look at, as I'm still tinkering with the HTML to make it look nice. I want the cool stripey blue bar at the very top of the post, above the heading, but I'm still working on it. However, now that it is getting some decent development done, I need to keep the blog up. <br />
<p>
It's somewhere along the long list of things to do. <br />
<p>
High on this list is preparing for the upcoming pitch. <br />
<br /><center>
<br /><span class="center" style="color:#000000;"><img width="425" src="http://www.scientificamerican.com/media/inline/blog/Image/scared_man.jpg" height="292" /></span>
<br />Kinda nervous.
<br /></center>
<p>
HOWEVER! I do have a plan for the presentation: <br />
I will 'pretend' that I have already visited Fentil, and that I have returned with field sketches and some wonky photographs, and that if my pitch is successful, I will be funded to go back to the planet and 'film' the Another Life documentary. I think it will make the pitch more fun, and acting out the part might help dispel some of the inevitable stage fright.
<p>
Once the pitch is behind us, I'll begin work on a block-through animatic in 3D. Lucky for me, I already have a tail-feeder block model rigged and ready for use:
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="335" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-zrooaaTNwg" width="600"></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<p>
I have also made a similar model for the bright-eye. It is yet to be rigged.
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SLGJT0q9Fzw/TqgGWXDKRSI/AAAAAAAAAoA/rHXQ8-a_hZM/s1600/rough_bright_eye_by_purple_plasmid-d4aizyi.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SLGJT0q9Fzw/TqgGWXDKRSI/AAAAAAAAAoA/rHXQ8-a_hZM/s400/rough_bright_eye_by_purple_plasmid-d4aizyi.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<p>
I'm definitely feeling a lot less stressed now that I have a basic plan of what I need to do over the next few weeks.
<p>
Next post I'll put up some drawings I've done - I'm pretty backed-up on doodles by this point.Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08003670630562338899noreply@blogger.com0
